The Statue Sainte Dévote is more than just a monument; it's a powerful symbol of Monaco's identity and history. Dedicated to Saint Devota, the patron saint of Monaco and Corsica, the statue embodies the story of a young Corsican woman martyred for her Christian faith in the early 4th century. Legend says that after her death, her body was placed on a boat headed for Africa, but a storm arose, and a dove emerged from her mouth to guide the boat safely to Monaco. The statue, created by artist Cyril de La Patellière, depicts Devota in a boat with a dove in her hands, commemorating this legendary arrival. Inaugurated in 1997 by Prince Rainier III, the statue is strategically located near the entrance to Monaco, close to the Monaco train station and the Church of Sainte Dévote, making it a visible landmark for both locals and visitors.Every year on January 26th, the eve of the Feast of Saint Devota, Monaco celebrates its patron saint with a traditional ceremony. The Prince sets a boat ablaze, a symbolic act that commemorates the saint's protection and the thwarting of relic thieves in medieval times. The statue serves as a focal point for reflection on Monaco's history, spirituality, and cultural traditions.
