How to get there

Monte Carlo Beach is in eastern Monaco on Avenue Princesse Grâce, near the border with France and the Larvotto district. The nearest major rail gateway is Monaco–Monte-Carlo station, served by regional trains along the French Riviera, while Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is the principal international air gateway for visitors arriving by air. History of Monte Carlo Beach

The Riviera Before the Resort

Monte Carlo Beach forms part of Monaco’s eastern coastal edge, a narrow Mediterranean strip shaped by the principality’s steep hinterland and limited land area. Before modern resort development, this shoreline belonged to a wider Riviera landscape of rocky coast, small coves and rural land outside the dense urban core. Monaco’s transformation into an international leisure destination during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries created demand for bathing establishments, hotels and promenades, changing the coast from a peripheral landscape into a carefully managed setting for recreation.

A 1920s Seaside Club

Monte-Carlo Beach opened in 1929, during the period when Riviera resorts were adapting to the growing popularity of sea bathing, swimming and outdoor social life. Its design is associated with architect Roger Seassal, whose work gave the property a distinctive modernist character suited to its narrow coastal site. The complex represented a shift from the formal casino-centred image of Monte-Carlo towards a more relaxed culture of sun, sport and seaside leisure, while retaining the polished hospitality associated with Monaco’s established resort institutions.
