Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the town of Murun, the capital of Khövsgöl Province. Head west on the A-11 road. After approximately 100 km, you will reach the town of Jargalant. From Jargalant, continue on the A-11 for about 80 km until you reach the junction for the road leading to Tolbo Lake. Follow the signs for Tolbo Lake, which will take you through stunning landscapes. The final stretch to Tolbo Lake may involve unpaved roads, so proceed with caution and ensure your vehicle is suitable for rough terrain.
Public Transportation
To reach Tolbo Lake by public transportation, take a bus or minivan from Murun to Bayan-Ölgii. Buses leave regularly from the central bus station, and the journey takes about 5-6 hours. Once in Bayan-Ölgii, hire a local taxi or a shared minivan that goes to Tolbo Lake. The fare for the taxi can range from 20,000 to 40,000 MNT, depending on negotiation and the number of passengers. Make sure to confirm the return schedule with the driver as well.
Hiking
For the adventurous traveler, consider hiking from the nearest village or camp area near Tolbo Lake. This option is best suited for those with experience in wilderness navigation. Ensure you have a good map or GPS device. Follow local trails leading towards the lake, and plan for a full day of hiking, as the terrain can be challenging. It's advisable to go with a guide who knows the area, which can be arranged through local tour operators.
