Hicks Park Campground: A Tranquil Retreat in Montana’s Wilderness

Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving, start from the nearest major town, which is Big Timber, MT. Head south on US-191 S for approximately 30 miles until you reach the junction with MT-78. Turn left onto MT-78 and continue for about 21 miles until you reach McLeod, MT. Once in McLeod, turn onto County Road 102 (also called Main Street) and follow it for about 3.5 miles. This road will lead you directly to Hicks Park Campground. Be mindful of the gravel road conditions and be prepared for a bumpy ride. There are no gas stations or stores along this route, so ensure you have enough fuel and supplies before you start.

• Public Transportation

  Public transportation options are limited in this remote area. The best approach is to take a Greyhound or a similar bus service to Big Timber, MT. From Big Timber, you would need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to take you to Hicks Park Campground, as there are no direct public transport links. It’s advisable to book this in advance as options may be limited. The taxi ride will be approximately 40 minutes and will cost around $50-$70 depending on the provider.

• Hiking

  If you're already in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness and prefer to hike to Hicks Park Campground, you can access it via several hiking trails. Ensure you have a detailed map of the trails in the area. A common route is to start from the East Rosebud Trailhead and follow the East Rosebud Trail. The hike is approximately 12 miles and takes about 6-8 hours, depending on your pace. Make sure to pack enough food, water, and gear for a day hike. Remember to check for trail conditions and weather before you set out.
