Car
From the nearest major town, Ennis, MT, take US-287 N towards Norris. Continue on US-287 N for approximately 30 miles until you reach the junction with MT-84. Turn left onto MT-84 and follow it for about 20 miles until you reach the town of McLeod. Once in McLeod, look for signs indicating the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness area. Continue on the main road through McLeod, and keep an eye out for the Box Canyon Pullout, which is located along the road. It is approximately 4 miles from the center of McLeod. There is no fee for parking at the pullout.
Public Transportation
While public transportation options are limited in this rural area, you can take a Greyhound bus to Livingston, MT. From Livingston, you would need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to McLeod, which is about 30 miles away. Once in McLeod, you will need to either walk or arrange for a local shuttle service to reach the Box Canyon Pullout, which is about 4 miles from the center of McLeod. Be sure to check in advance for availability and costs of local transport options.
Hiking
If you are already within the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness and prefer hiking, many trails lead towards Box Canyon. Determine your starting point and follow any marked trails that head toward McLeod. As you navigate, use a map or GPS to ensure you are heading in the direction of Box Canyon Pullout, which is located at coordinates 45.2735346 latitude and -110.2503301 longitude. The trails can be rugged, so bring adequate gear and supplies for a day hike.
