If you are traveling by car, start by navigating to McLeod, MT 59052. From the center of McLeod, head west on MT-419 for approximately 7.5 miles until you reach the junction with Forest Road 142. Turn left onto Forest Road 142, which leads directly to the Upsidedown Trailhead. Continue on this road for about 2 miles, and you'll arrive at the trailhead. Be aware that this road may have rough patches, so a high-clearance vehicle is recommended.
Public Transportation + Hiking
Public transportation options are limited in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. If you are coming from a larger city, you can take a bus to Livingston, MT. From Livingston, you will need to arrange for a local taxi or rideshare service to take you to McLeod, MT. Once in McLeod, follow the car directions above to reach the Upsidedown Trailhead, which will require approximately a 2-mile hike from the nearest accessible point via Forest Road 142.
Biking
For those who prefer to bike, you can ride from McLeod, MT to the Upsidedown Trailhead. Start from the center of McLeod and follow MT-419 west to Forest Road 142. The biking distance is about 9.5 miles, with some sections along gravel roads. Ensure you have a mountain bike suitable for rough terrain and carry enough water and snacks for the trip.
