Getting There

  • Walking

    From the center of Big Sky, head east on Highway 191. Walk along the sidewalk and follow signs toward the Big Sky Resort area. Continue on this path for approximately 4 miles until you reach the intersection with Lone Mountain Trail. Turn right onto Lone Mountain Trail and walk for another mile. You will pass various shops and restaurants. Once you reach the entrance to the Big Sky Resort, continue straight as the road will turn into a pedestrian path. After about another half mile, you will reach the base of the mountain where you can see the Giant Pile of Dirt area.

  • Biking

    Rent a bike from one of the local shops in Big Sky. Start at the Big Sky Town Center and bike east on Highway 191 towards the Big Sky Resort. Stay on the bike path which runs parallel to the highway for about 4 miles. When you reach the Lone Mountain Trail, take a right. Continue biking for another mile on Lone Mountain Trail, where you will see various landmarks and beautiful scenery. Upon reaching the entrance to Big Sky Resort, keep going straight along the bike path, which will lead you directly to the Giant Pile of Dirt.

    Check the local transit schedule for the shuttle service that operates between Big Sky and Bozeman. Board the shuttle at any major stop in Big Sky. Once you arrive at the Bozeman stop, transfer to a local bus that services the area around 337 Magdalene Way.
