Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start from the Old Faithful area, which is a central point in Yellowstone National Park. Head north on Grand Loop Road for approximately 7 miles. Keep an eye out for the signs directing you to the West Thumb area. After passing the West Thumb Geyser Basin, continue on Grand Loop Road until you reach the junction for the South Entrance to the park. Take the left fork and follow the road for about 1.5 miles. Look for a small parking area on your right side, which is near Opal Pool. From the parking area, it's a short walk to reach the pool. Make sure to check for any road closures or construction updates that may affect your route.

• Public Transportation

  If you are using public transportation, the nearest shuttle services operate between various locations in Yellowstone, including Old Faithful and Canyon Village. To get to Opal Pool, take the shuttle from Old Faithful to the West Thumb area. This shuttle typically runs during the summer months and may require advance booking. Once you arrive at West Thumb, you will need to walk approximately 1.5 miles along Grand Loop Road to reach the parking area near Opal Pool. • Hiking

  For those looking for a more adventurous route, you can hike to Opal Pool from the West Thumb Geyser Basin. This hike is approximately 2 miles long and takes you through scenic areas of the park. Begin at the West Thumb Geyser Basin trailhead, following the marked trails that lead towards Opal Pool. Ensure you have proper hiking gear and enough water. Note that this is a natural area, so be aware of wildlife and follow park regulations.
