Car
If you are traveling by car, start your journey from the nearest major city, Marrakech. Get on the N9 highway heading south towards Ouarzazate. After approximately 40 km, you will reach a junction; take the right turn towards the R203 road. Continue for about 30 km until you reach the village of Amassine, which is located near the High Atlas Mountain. From Amassine, you can follow local signs or use a GPS to navigate to the specific location of High Atlas Mountain at coordinates 31.4299° N, 6.9400° W. Make sure to check road conditions as some routes may be narrow or unpaved. Parking is typically available near trailheads.
Public Transportation
To reach High Atlas Mountain using public transportation, first take a bus from Marrakech to Ouarzazate, which takes about 4 hours and costs around 70-100 MAD. Once in Ouarzazate, you can catch a shared taxi (also known as a grand taxi) to Amassine for about 30-50 MAD per person. The shared taxi will drop you off in the village, and from there, you can either walk or hire a local guide to take you to the mountain. It’s advisable to confirm the price and negotiate beforehand if you opt for a local guide or taxi.
Hiking
For those who enjoy hiking, if you are already in Amassine, you can hike to the High Atlas Mountain. Start from the village center, following local trails. Ensure you have appropriate footwear and supplies, as the trails can be steep and rocky. The hike can take several hours depending on your pace and the specific area of the mountain you wish to explore. It is recommended to start early in the day to avoid the heat and ensure you have ample time to enjoy the scenery.
