Car
If you're driving, start from Opuwo, the main town in Kaokoland. Head northwest on the C43 road towards the town of Sesfontein. After about 90 kilometers, you will reach a junction. Take the left onto the D3700 road. Continue for approximately 60 kilometers until you see signs for the Petrified Forest. The last stretch is a gravel road, so ensure your vehicle is suitable for off-road conditions. The journey will take around 2 to 3 hours depending on road conditions.
Public Transport
Public transport options are limited in Kaokoland. From Opuwo, you can take a local taxi or shuttle service that heads towards Sesfontein. Confirm with the driver if they can drop you off at the junction on the D3700 road. From there, you may need to arrange a taxi or local guide to take you the remaining 60 kilometers to the Petrified Forest as public transport is sparse. Expect to pay a fare for the taxi or shuttle service which could range from N$150 to N$300.
Guided Tours
Consider booking a guided tour that includes transportation from your lodge or hotel. Many tour operators in Opuwo offer day trips to the Petrified Forest, which include a knowledgeable guide and vehicle. This option usually costs between N$800 to N$1500 per person, depending on the inclusions such as meals and entry fees.
