Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Car
To reach Bird Island by car, start your journey from the nearest major town, Swakopmund. Head north on the B2 highway towards Henties Bay. After approximately 40 kilometers, you will reach the junction to the Skeleton Coast National Park. Continue on the B2, and soon you will see signs for the park entrance. Entry fees may apply, so ensure you have cash ready (approximately N$ 100 per person). After entering the park, follow the gravel roads towards the coast. Bird Island is located about 30 kilometers from the park entrance, and you may need a 4x4 vehicle for the last part of the journey due to rough terrain. The island is accessible during low tide, so check tide times before your trip.
Public Transportation
If you are using public transportation, you can take a shuttle or bus from Swakopmund to Henties Bay. Once in Henties Bay, you can hire a local taxi or guide who knows the area well to take you to Bird Island. It is advisable to arrange this in advance, as not all taxis may be familiar with the route. Expect to pay around N$ 300 for a taxi ride to Bird Island. Ensure you discuss the return trip with your driver to avoid being stranded.
Boat Tour
Another exciting option is to book a boat tour from Swakopmund, which often includes bird watching at Bird Island. Several local operators offer these tours, which can cost between N$ 800 to N$ 1,200 per person, depending on the package. This option provides a unique perspective of the island and the opportunity to see marine life along the way. Check with local tour operators for availability and schedules.
