Car
If you are starting your journey in the capital city, Kathmandu, you can hire a private car or take a taxi from Naya Bazaar Marg to the domestic airport, Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). This journey takes about 15-30 minutes depending on traffic. Ensure to leave early to avoid delays.
Flight
From Tribhuvan International Airport, take a domestic flight to Lukla, which is the nearest airport to Mount Everest Base Camp. Flights to Lukla are operated by several airlines and typically take about 30-40 minutes. It is essential to book your flight in advance, as seats fill quickly, especially during peak trekking season. The cost of a one-way ticket usually ranges from $150 to $200 USD.
Trekking
Upon arrival at the Lukla Airport, you will begin your trek to Everest Base Camp. The trek to Base Camp usually starts in Lukla and takes around 12-14 days round trip, depending on your pace and acclimatization needs. Follow the main trekking route from Lukla through Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep before finally reaching Everest Base Camp. Make sure to hire a local guide or join a trekking group for safety and navigation assistance.
Permits
Before starting your trek, ensure you obtain the necessary permits. You will need a TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card and a Sagarmatha National Park entry permit. These can usually be obtained in Kathmandu or at the National Park entrance in Monjo, near the beginning of your trek. The combined cost for these permits is approximately $50 to $60 USD.
Accommodation
Along the trekking route, various tea houses and lodges are available for accommodation. It is advisable to book your lodgings in advance during peak seasons. Accommodation costs range from $5 to $20 USD per night, depending on the location and amenities.
Return Journey
After reaching Everest Base Camp, retrace your steps back to Lukla. You can take the same flight back to Kathmandu from Lukla. Be sure to check the flight schedule as weather conditions can affect flights, and always have a buffer day in your itinerary for potential delays.
