Getting There

• Car or Public Transportation to Kathmandu

  Start your journey from the Helambu Trek area. You will need to travel back to Kathmandu to access transportation options to Makalu Base Camp. The most common way is to take a local bus from places like Melamchi or Sundarijal to Kathmandu, which may cost around NPR 200-500 depending on your starting point.

• Bus from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar

  Once in Kathmandu, you will head to the bus station, which is typically located at New Bus Park in Gongabu. Look for buses heading to Tumlingtar, a major starting point for the Makalu Base Camp Trek. The bus ride takes approximately 12-14 hours and costs around NPR 1,000-1,500. It is advisable to book your tickets a day in advance due to high demand.

• Trekking from Tumlingtar to Makalu Base Camp

  Upon arrival at Tumlingtar, you will need to arrange a local guide or join a trekking group to access the Makalu Base Camp. The trek from Tumlingtar to Makalu Base Camp typically takes around 10-12 days, depending on your pace and stops along the way. Ensure you have all necessary permits, including the Makalu Barun National Park permit, which your guide can help you obtain. The cost for a guide can range from NPR 2,000-5,000 per day, excluding food and accommodation.
