Getting There

• Car

  To reach Makalu Base Camp from Kathmandu, you should first take a private car or taxi from Thamel, Kathmandu to the bus station. The most common bus station for long-distance travel is the New Bus Park in Gongabu. From there, take a bus heading towards Tumlingtar, which is approximately a 12-15 hour journey. The bus fare ranges from NPR 1,500 to NPR 2,500 depending on the bus company and class. Once you arrive in Tumlingtar, you can find local accommodations if needed.

• Public Transportation (Bus)

  After reaching Tumlingtar, you will need to hire a local jeep or take a bus to the trailhead at Num. The journey from Tumlingtar to Num takes about 3-4 hours, and the cost for a jeep is around NPR 2,000-3,000 per person. From Num, the trek to Makalu Base Camp will begin. Make sure to check for local guides who can accompany you on your trek.

• Trekking

  The trek from Num to Makalu Base Camp typically takes about 7-10 days, depending on your pace and the route taken. You will pass through beautiful landscapes, charming villages, and various terrains. Ensure to have a local trekking guide who can assist with navigation and provide insights on the local culture and environment.

• Helicopter

  For a quicker option, you can charter a helicopter from Tumlingtar to Makalu Base Camp. This option is more expensive, with prices starting around NPR 60,000-80,000 per person for a round trip. Helicopter services should be booked in advance, and it's advisable to check the availability due to weather conditions.
