Getting There

  • Car

    If you are traveling by car, start from the nearest major city, which is Tumlingtar. From Tumlingtar, you need to drive towards the Makalu Barun National Park entrance, which is approximately 50 km away. The road can be bumpy and may take around 2-3 hours to reach the park entrance. Once you reach the entrance, you will need to pay an entry fee, which is approximately NPR 2000 for foreigners. After entering the park, continue driving to the nearest village, which is Chichila. You can park your car here, but make sure to check for any local parking regulations.

  • Public Transportation

    To reach Makalu Base Camp using public transportation, you can take a bus from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar. Buses leave from the New Bus Park in Kathmandu and the journey takes about 12-14 hours, costing around NPR 1500-2000. From Tumlingtar, you will need to hire a local jeep or take a bus to the Makalu Barun National Park entrance, which costs about NPR 500-800. After entering the park, you can trek to Chichila, where you will start your trek to the base camp.
