History and Heritage

Hoorn, granted city rights in 1357, built its prosperity on cheese trade at the central Roode Steen square. By the 19th century, this market was North Holland's largest, where regional farmers displayed their wares. Trade ceased after World War II but was gloriously revived in 2007 for the city's 650th anniversary. Today, it faithfully recreates the past with carriers hauling cheeses on wooden stretchers and deals sealed by traditional hand-claps.

The Event Schedule

Every Tuesday in June, July, and August, the market unfolds from 13:00. Stalls set up by 13:45, followed by a welcome and West Frisian dance group in period attire. Cheese carriers arrive at 14:00 for the official opening. From 14:15 to 15:30, trading simmers with music and dance, culminating in a grand finale at 15:30 and close by 15:45. The compact program packs energy into 90 minutes of tradition.

Roode Steen buzzes with tourists amid Hoorn's gabled facades and canals. Costumed "kaasmeisjes" and sturdy carriers create a time-warp scene, complete with cheese weighing on antique scales at the historic Waag building. Folk dances add color, while vendors offer samples of Gouda and Edam. The square's cobblestones and surrounding cafes enhance the festive vibe, blending commerce, culture, and community.
