Travel Guide to Het Kootwijkerzand

Getting There

• Car

  If you're driving, start from the visitor center of Hoge Veluwe National Park. Head southeast on the Houtkampweg, then turn left onto the N304. Continue on N304 for about 10 kilometers until you reach the village of Kootwijk. Follow the signs to Het Kootwijkerzand, which is located just south of Kootwijk. There is a parking area available near the entrance, which may incur a parking fee depending on the park's regulations.

• Public Transportation

  For those using public transportation, take a train to Apeldoorn station. From Apeldoorn, you can catch bus number 107 towards 'Kootwijk'. Disembark at the 'Kootwijk' stop. From there, it is about a 20-minute walk (1.5 km) to Het Kootwijkerzand. Follow the signs directing you toward the nature reserve. Be sure to check the local bus schedules for the latest information on route times and frequency.

• Bicycle

  Another great option is to rent a bicycle at one of the bike rental stations within Hoge Veluwe National Park. From the visitor center, you can take the designated bike paths through the park, following signs towards Kootwijk. The ride will take approximately 30-40 minutes, depending on your pace. Enjoy the scenic routes along the way, as you will pass through beautiful landscapes before arriving at Het Kootwijkerzand.

• Walking

  If you're already within Hoge Veluwe National Park and prefer to walk, you can hike from the visitor center. The distance is approximately 5 kilometers (about 1 hour) of walking. Follow the marked trails toward Kootwijk, and keep an eye out for signs leading you to Het Kootwijkerzand. Bring plenty of water and wear comfortable hiking shoes, as the terrain can be sandy and uneven in places.
