Walking
If you are in the city center of Leiden, start at the main train station, Leiden Centraal. Exit the station and walk towards the main road, Stationsweg. Turn left and continue straight until you reach the crossroads with Haarlemmerstraat. Turn right on Haarlemmerstraat and walk straight for about 10 minutes. You will pass several shops and cafes. Keep walking until you reach the intersection with Breestraat. Turn left onto Breestraat, and continue walking until you reach the large square, called Burcht. From there, head towards the canal and cross the bridge to reach the area with the National Monument. The monument is located on Dam Square, which will be directly in front of you.
Bicycle
If you prefer cycling, you can rent a bike from one of the many rental shops near Leiden Centraal. Start at the station and head towards Stationsweg, then follow the same route as if you were walking. Once you reach Haarlemmerstraat, continue straight and cycle down it for about 10 minutes. Turn left onto Breestraat, then head towards Burcht. Once you reach the canal, cross the bridge and follow the signs towards Dam Square. The National Monument will be easily visible from the square.
Public Transport
To get to Amsterdam from Leiden using public transport, head to Leiden Centraal station. Purchase a ticket to Amsterdam Centraal station. The train ride takes approximately 30 minutes. Once you arrive at Amsterdam Centraal, exit the station and walk towards the front of the station. From there, head straight down towards the Dam Square, which is about a 15-minute walk. You can follow the directions or use a map on your mobile device. The National Monument will be directly in front of you once you arrive at Dam Square.
