Bus
From Carson City, head to the nearest bus stop for the Carson City area, which is located at 51 E Williams St. Take the 'Lake Tahoe Express' bus heading towards South Lake Tahoe. The bus will take you directly to South Lake Tahoe. Once you arrive at the South Lake Tahoe bus terminal, you can either walk or take a local taxi to the Mt. Tallac Trailhead. Walking will take approximately 30 minutes. Simply head north on US-50, then turn left onto Mt. Tallac Rd and follow it until you reach the trailhead.

Bicycle
If you prefer cycling, you can rent a bike in Carson City. Start by heading to the Carson City Bike Shop located at 1221 S Carson St. From there, head south on S Carson St until you reach US-50. Turn left onto US-50 and follow it all the way to South Lake Tahoe. The ride is about 30 miles and will take approximately 2.5 to 3 hours depending on your pace. Once you reach South Lake Tahoe, follow the signs to Mt. Tallac Road to find the trailhead.

Walking
For the adventurous tourist, you can walk to Mt. Tallac Trailhead from South Lake Tahoe. Start at the South Lake Tahoe bus terminal and walk north on US-50. Turn left onto Mt. Tallac Rd and continue following the road until you arrive at the trailhead. This walk is quite long, approximately 4 miles and will take around 1.5 to 2 hours, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
