History of Seaside Heights

Lenape Coastal Homelands

Before European settlement, the wider Jersey Shore was part of the homeland of Lenape communities, whose lives were closely connected to the region’s forests, bays, wetlands and Atlantic shore. The barrier island and Barnegat Bay formed part of a coastal environment used for seasonal movement, fishing, shellfish gathering and hunting. Seaside Heights did not yet exist as an incorporated resort, but its geographical setting was already defined by the relationship between ocean and bay. European colonisation, changing land ownership and the growth of nearby mainland communities gradually altered those patterns, while the island remained relatively undeveloped for centuries because of its shifting sands and exposure to storms.

From Barrier Island to Resort

Seaside Heights emerged as a planned resort in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when improved rail and road connections made New Jersey’s coast increasingly accessible to holidaymakers from inland towns and cities. Streets, cottages, boarding houses and seasonal businesses developed on the barrier island, transforming a largely undeveloped shore into a summer community. The municipality was incorporated in 1913, reflecting the growing permanence of its residential and tourism infrastructure. Its appeal rested on the combination of an ocean beach, fresh air, amusement and proximity to the mainland, a formula that shaped many American seaside resorts during the period.

The Boardwalk and Casino Pier
