Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the city center of Las Cruces. Head south on Main Street toward Amador Avenue. Continue straight onto S Valley Drive (NM-185 S) for about 3 miles. Turn right onto Tortugas Mountain Road, which will lead you directly to the entrance of Tortugas Mountain Recreation Area. There is a parking area available at the base of the mountain. Please note that there may be a parking fee, so it’s advisable to have some cash available.
Public Transportation
Public transportation options are limited in the Mesilla Valley area. However, you can take the RoadRUNNER Transit Bus (Route 1) from various points in Las Cruces. Get off at the stop closest to S Valley Drive and Tortugas Mountain Road. From there, it will be necessary to walk approximately 1 mile to reach the entrance of Tortugas Mountain Recreation Area. Be sure to check the latest bus schedules for exact timings and routes. Note that the bus fare is usually a few dollars, so keep some cash or a transit card on hand.
Biking or Walking
For those who prefer biking or walking, you can start from downtown Las Cruces. Make your way to S Valley Drive and follow the same route as the car directions. The distance is about 3 miles, and the route is relatively flat, making it accessible for most bikers and walkers. Be cautious while biking along the road, as there may be traffic. Bring plenty of water, especially during warmer months.
