Getting There

  • Walking

    From the center of Truth or Consequences, head east on New Mexico Avenue (US-60). Continue walking for about a mile until you reach the intersection with NM-51. Turn right onto NM-51 and follow it for approximately 8 miles. You will soon see signs for Elephant Butte. As you enter Elephant Butte, keep an eye out for the Ft McRae Historical Marker, which is located off to the left side of NM-51. The marker is situated in a small area near the entrance to the Elephant Butte State Park.

    If you have a bicycle, start at the Truth or Consequences Public Library on 400 W 4th St. Head east on 4th St towards New Mexico Avenue, then turn left onto New Mexico Avenue (US-60). Continue straight for about a mile. Then, turn right onto NM-51 and continue for about 8 miles. Look for the Ft McRae Historical Marker on the left side as you approach Elephant Butte. Make sure to wear a helmet and follow all traffic rules.

    Take the local bus service from Truth or Consequences to Elephant Butte. The bus will take you along NM-51. Once you arrive in Elephant Butte, ask the driver or locals for directions to the Ft McRae Historical Marker, which is approximately 2 miles from the bus stop.
