Public Transport - Bus
Start at the Octagon in Dunedin, which is a central hub for public transport. Take the 'Northern Bus' (Route 1) from the Octagon. You will need to get off at the 'Cargill's Corner' bus stop. This journey will take approximately 20 minutes. Once you disembark, look for the road leading to Mount Cargill. Follow the signage for Mount Cargill, which is a marked walking path.

Walking
After getting off the bus at Cargill's Corner, head north along the main road for about 500 meters until you reach the Mount Cargill Track entrance on your left. The walking track is well-marked and will lead you directly to Buttars Peak. The trek takes about 1-1.5 hours to reach the peak, depending on your pace, and the trail offers stunning views along the way.

Biking
If you prefer to bike, you can rent a bike from one of the local rental shops in Dunedin. Start at the Octagon and take the same Northern Bus (Route 1) to Cargill's Corner. Once you arrive, continue north along the road to the Mount Cargill Track entrance. The biking path is mostly uphill, and it will take about 30 minutes to reach the start of the hiking trail. From there, you can lock your bike and proceed on foot to Buttars Peak.
