Bus
From Nelson city center, walk to the Nelson Bus Station located at 5 Trafalgar Street. Catch the 'Tasman Connector' bus heading towards Takaka. You will need to ask the driver to drop you off at the closest point to Tonga Island, as the bus does not go directly to the island. Once you arrive at the bus stop, you may need to walk a short distance to find a boat service that can take you to Tonga Island.
Bicycle
If you prefer cycling, rent a bike from one of the local rental shops in Nelson. Start your journey on the cycle path towards the Tasman District. Follow the signs for the Great Taste Trail, which will lead you towards the Motueka region. Once you reach Motueka, look for a boat service that offers trips to Tonga Island. Make sure to check the schedule ahead of time as services may vary.
Walking
Walking to Tonga Island directly from Nelson is not practical due to the distance and water barriers. However, if you are keen on exploring, you can walk to the Nelson Marina. From the marina, you can inquire about boat services that provide transportation to Tonga Island. The marina is about a 30-minute walk from the city center, located at 1 Haven Road.
