Public Transport
From downtown Hickory, walk to the nearest bus stop on Main Ave NW. Take the Catawba Valley Transit Authority (CVTA) bus route 2 towards Lenoir. Ride the bus for about 25 minutes and get off at the stop near the intersection of Highway 70 and Lake James Road. From there, it’s about a 15-minute walk to Lake James Beach. Head east on Lake James Road, then turn right on to Lake James State Park Road, and follow the signs to the beach area.

Bicycle
If you prefer cycling, rent a bicycle from one of the local rental shops in Hickory. Start at Union Square Park and head west on 1st St NW. Continue straight as it merges into 2nd St NW, then take a left onto Main Ave NW. Follow the road until you reach Highway 70. Turn left on Highway 70 and follow it for about 5 miles until you reach Lake James Road. Turn right onto Lake James Road and then right onto Lake James State Park Road to reach the beach.

If you are staying in a hotel near downtown Hickory, you can walk to Lake James Beach. Head west on 1st St NW and continue onto 2nd St NW. From there, take a left onto Main Ave NW and walk until you reach the intersection with Highway 70. It’s about a 2.5-mile walk, so it may take around 50 minutes. Once you reach Highway 70, turn right and continue walking until you can turn onto Lake James Road. Follow Lake James Road until it connects with Lake James State Park Road, where you will find Lake James Beach.
