Car
If you're traveling by car, start from Oslo and take the E6 highway north towards Hamar. After about 100 km, take the exit towards the E16 road, which leads to Fagernes. Continue on the E16 for about 80 km until you reach Fagernes. From Fagernes, follow the signs to the Rv51 road, which will take you towards Hjelledalen. After approximately 30 km, you will reach the village of Hjelledalen. Øvstefossen is located just outside the village. Look for signs directing you to the waterfall, which is about 5 km from the center of Hjelledalen. Be sure to park in designated areas, as parking may incur a fee.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a train from Oslo to Fagernes. The train journey will take approximately 3-4 hours. From Fagernes, you will need to catch a local bus towards Hjelledalen. The bus ride will take around 30 minutes. Once you arrive in Hjelledalen, Øvstefossen is about a 5 km walk from the bus stop. Follow the signs towards the waterfall, and be prepared for a scenic hike. Make sure to check the bus schedules in advance as they may vary, especially during weekends.
Bicycle
If you're feeling adventurous and want to cycle, you can rent a bicycle in Fagernes. From Fagernes, take the Rv51 road towards Hjelledalen. The ride is approximately 30 km and is mostly downhill, making it a pleasant journey. Once in Hjelledalen, follow the signs to Øvstefossen.
