Getting There

    If you're coming from the city of Bend, take US-97 N for approximately 38 miles. At the junction with OR-26 E, turn right and continue for about 30 miles until you reach the town of Mitchell. From Mitchell, turn left onto OR-19 N and follow the road for around 15 miles. The entrance to John Day Fossil Beds National Monument will be on your right at 32651 OR-19. Make sure to check road conditions, especially in winter, as some roads may be closed or require chains.

    To reach John Day Fossil Beds via public transportation, take a Greyhound bus to the town of Prineville. From Prineville, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to take you to Mitchell, which is about 35 miles away. Once in Mitchell, you can either walk or arrange for a taxi to reach the monument, which is approximately 15 miles north on OR-19. Continue on US-97 S for about 20 miles, then turn right onto OR-26 E towards Mitchell. In Mitchell, turn left onto OR-19 N and proceed for approximately 15 miles. The monument will be on your right at 32651 OR-19. This route will offer scenic views of the Oregon landscape.
