Car
If you're traveling by car, start from Portland, Oregon. Take I-84 East toward The Dalles. After about 20 miles, take exit 17 for Troutdale. Follow the signs to the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Continue on E Historic Columbia River Hwy for approximately 10 miles until you reach the Larch Mountain Road. Turn left onto Larch Mountain Road and follow it for about 5 miles to the trailhead parking area. Be aware that a parking fee of $5 may be required, so bring cash or a credit card.
Public Transportation + Car
If you prefer public transportation, take the MAX Light Rail from downtown Portland to the Gateway Transit Center. From there, transfer to the Columbia Gorge Express bus, which operates daily service to the Columbia River Gorge. Get off at the Stop for the Historic Columbia River Highway. From that point, you will need a rideshare service (like Uber or Lyft) or a taxi to reach the Larch Mountain Trailhead, which is about 5 miles away. Be prepared for additional costs for the rideshare service.
Hiking
For those already in the Cascade Range and looking for a hiking option, you can access the Larch Mountain Trail from the Larch Mountain Trailhead. The trail begins at the end of Larch Mountain Road, which you can reach by following the directions provided above. The hike is about 7.2 miles round trip and provides stunning views of the surrounding area. Ensure you have proper hiking gear and check trail conditions before heading out.
