Car
From Bend, Oregon, take US-97 North for approximately 30 miles. Merge onto OR-26 East toward Madras. Continue on OR-26 for about 40 miles, then turn left onto the Painted Hills Highway (also known as County Road 43). Follow the Painted Hills Highway for about 10 miles until you reach the Painted Hills entrance. Be sure to have a map or GPS as cell service can be spotty in certain areas.
Public Transportation
For travelers relying on public transportation, take a bus from Bend to Prineville using the Cascades East Transit (Route 20). From Prineville, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to reach Painted Hills, as there is no direct public transport to the site. Be prepared for potential costs associated with the taxi or rideshare, which can vary based on distance and time.
Carpool or Rideshare
If you are staying in a hotel or hostel in Deschutes County, inquire about rideshare options with fellow travelers or staff. Many visitors enjoy visiting Painted Hills together, which can reduce costs and enhance the experience. Use apps like Uber or Lyft if you prefer a more direct route but check for availability as rides may be limited in rural areas.
