Conquer the Heights at Mt. Hood Summit

Getting There

• Car

  If you're traveling by car, start from the nearest major city, Portland, OR. Take I-84 East to US-26 East, following the signs towards Mount Hood. Once you reach Government Camp, continue on E. Gov't Camp Loop Rd. and follow the signs to Timberline Lodge. From Timberline Lodge, you can access the trails leading to Mt. Hood summit. Make sure your vehicle can handle mountain roads, especially if there’s snow or ice in the winter months. Parking fees may apply at Timberline Lodge, so bring some cash or a credit card.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Mt. Hood summit via public transportation, take the MAX Light Rail from Portland to Gresham and transfer to the Mt. Hood Express bus. The Mt. Hood Express operates daily from Gresham to Government Camp, with stops at Timberline Lodge. Check the Mt. Hood Express schedule online for specific times. Once you arrive at Timberline Lodge, you can start your hike to the summit. Be aware that the bus fare is around $2.50 each way, and you should have exact change or a valid transit pass.

• Hiking

  After reaching Timberline Lodge, the hike to the summit of Mt. Hood is a strenuous climb. Begin your trek at the Timberline trailhead, following the marked paths. Be prepared for altitude changes, and check for trail conditions before you start. Depending on the season, you may need climbing gear, including crampons and an ice axe. It's also important to inform someone of your plans and expected return time, as the conditions can change rapidly.
