Car
To reach Eagle Cap by car, start from the town of Joseph, Oregon. Head east on OR-82 for about 3 miles until you reach the junction with the Wallowa Lake Highway (OR-351). Turn left onto OR-351 and follow the road until you reach Wallowa Lake. Continue on the road around the lake, which becomes Forest Road 39. Drive approximately 12 miles on Forest Road 39, which will take you into the Eagle Cap Wilderness area. Look for signs directing you to Eagle Cap; parking areas may vary, but be prepared for a short hike to reach the peak.
Public Transportation + Car
If you're traveling by public transportation, take the bus from La Grande to Joseph, which is the nearest town to Eagle Cap. From Joseph, you will need to rent a car or find a local taxi service to take you to Eagle Cap. Once you have a vehicle, follow the same directions as above from Joseph, heading east on OR-82 and then onto OR-351 to Wallowa Lake before continuing on Forest Road 39.
Hiking
For those who are already in the Eagle Cap Wilderness area and wish to hike to the peak, you can start from the trailhead located at the end of Forest Road 39. The main trail, known as the Eagle Cap Trail, is well-marked and leads directly to the peak. It is approximately a 5-7 mile hike, with significant elevation gain, so be prepared with proper hiking gear and sufficient water. There are no fees for hiking in the wilderness area, but be sure to follow Leave No Trace principles.
