Car
From any location in the Wallowa Mountains, head towards Lostine, OR 97814. If you're starting from Joseph, take OR-82 W for about 16 miles until you reach Lostine. Once in Lostine, turn onto Lostine River Road (also known as County Road 1910). Follow this road for approximately 10 miles until you reach the Eagle Cap Wilderness trailhead. There are a few parking areas available near the trailhead, so make sure to park in designated spots. Note that some trailheads may require a Northwest Forest Pass for parking, which costs $5 for a daily pass or $30 for an annual pass.
Public Transportation
If you are traveling via public transportation, your best option is to take a bus to La Grande, OR, which is the nearest major city. From La Grande, you can take a taxi or rideshare service to Lostine, OR. Once in Lostine, follow the car guidance described above to reach the Eagle Cap Wilderness trailhead. Be sure to check the schedule of the bus service in advance, as options may be limited and do not operate daily. A typical fare from La Grande to Lostine can range from $20 to $40, depending on the service.
Hiking
If you are already in the vicinity and want to hike into the wilderness, there are several trails that lead into Eagle Cap Wilderness. The most popular trailheads include the Anthony Lakes Trailhead and the Hurricane Creek Trailhead. From the parking areas, follow the established trails that lead into the wilderness. Each trail varies in difficulty and length, so choose one that fits your ability and time constraints. Be sure to carry a map and sufficient supplies, as cell service may be limited in the wilderness.
