Car
From Skardu, drive towards the town of Askole, which is the last accessible point by vehicle. The drive takes approximately 8-10 hours, depending on road conditions. Follow the Skardu Road and look for signs directing you towards Askole. Once you reach Askole, you will need to park your vehicle here, as the road beyond is not accessible by car.
Trekking
From Askole, you will begin a multi-day trek to K2 Base Camp. The trek usually takes around 8-10 days. The route will take you through the Baltoro Glacier, passing through various camps such as Jhola, Paiju, Urdukus, and Goro II before reaching Base Camp. It is recommended to hire a local guide and porter for assistance, which can be arranged in Askole. Costs for guides and porters vary, but expect to pay around PKR 3000-5000 per day per person.
Public Transportation
If you don't have a private vehicle, you can take a bus or jeep from Skardu to Askole. Buses leave from the Skardu bus station and the journey to Askole typically takes about 10-12 hours. Make sure to confirm the departure times as they can vary. The fare is usually around PKR 1000-1500. Once in Askole, you will still need to trek to K2 Base Camp as described above.
Accommodation
Before starting your trek, it’s advisable to stay a night in Skardu for acclimatization. You can find various guesthouses or hotels in Skardu ranging from PKR 1500-5000 per night. Booking in advance is recommended during peak trekking seasons.
