Getting There

  • Walking

    From the center of Mount Hagen, start at the Mount Hagen Market. Head southwest on the main road (Kumul Highway) and walk for about 1.5 kilometers until you reach the junction at the end of the town. You will see signs pointing towards the Southern Highlands. Continue on this road, which becomes a dirt road as you leave the urban area. After approximately 3 kilometers, you will come across a sign indicating the direction to Upper Mendi. Turn right at this sign and follow the road for another 5 kilometers, keeping an eye out for the landmarks such as local villages and small streams. Tongo River is located near the intersection of this road and the river itself, which should be visible as you approach.

    Rent a bicycle from a local shop in Mount Hagen. Begin your journey at the Mount Hagen Market and cycle along Kumul Highway. After about 1.5 kilometers, you will reach a junction; continue straight. As you move out of the city, the road will transition to dirt, so be cautious with your speed. After around 3 kilometers, look for a sign for Upper Mendi and make a right turn. Continue cycling for about 5 kilometers, watching for local landmarks. Tongo River will be on your right-hand side as you approach the intersection of the dirt road.

    Find a motorbike taxi at a designated pick-up point in Mount Hagen, preferably near the Mount Hagen Market. Inform the driver that you want to go to Tongo River via Upper Mendi. The driver will take you southwest on Kumul Highway. After approximately 1.5 kilometers, the driver will navigate the junction at the end of the town, continuing straight on the main road. You will travel for about 8 kilometers total, and the driver will drop you off at the intersection near Tongo River where the road meets the river.
