From Kainantu, follow the signs to the road leading towards Mt Wilhelm. The last part of the drive will involve navigating a rougher road, so a 4WD vehicle is recommended. The drive from Madang to Mt Wilhelm takes around 4-5 hours depending on road conditions.
Public Transportation
To use public transportation, start at the Madang bus terminal where you can catch a bus heading to Goroka. The bus fare is typically around 30 PGK. Once you arrive in Goroka, switch to a bus heading to Kainantu. The fare for this leg is about 15 PGK. From Kainantu, you will need to hire a local vehicle or arrange for a taxi to take you to Mt Wilhelm, which may cost around 100-150 PGK, depending on the negotiation.
Hiking
After reaching the closest point by vehicle, you will likely need to hike the remaining distance to the base of Mt Wilhelm. Ensure you have appropriate hiking gear and guide maps, as trails can be challenging. It's advisable to hire a local guide, which may cost around 200 PGK for their services. The hike can take several hours, so plan accordingly.
