Car
If you are traveling by car, start by heading towards Smithsburg, Maryland. Use your GPS or a map application and enter 'High Rock, Smithsburg, MD 21783' as your destination. The most common route is to take Interstate 70 (I-70) East from the Appalachian Mountains. Merge onto I-81 North towards Hagerstown. Take exit 5 for MD-64 West towards Smithsburg. Follow MD-64 until you reach Smithsburg. From there, look for signs indicating the South Mountain State Park. The drive will take approximately 1-2 hours depending on your starting point in the Appalachian Mountains. There is no cost for parking at the trailhead.
Public Transportation
If you prefer to use public transportation, you can take a Greyhound or Megabus service to Hagerstown, Maryland. From Hagerstown, you will need to use a local taxi service or rideshare app (like Uber or Lyft) to reach High Rock. The taxi ride will take approximately 30 minutes and will cost around $30-$40. Make sure to check the latest bus schedules and book your tickets in advance.
Hiking
Once you arrive at the South Mountain State Park entrance, you can access the High Rock hiking trails. The most popular trail is the High Rock Trail which starts from the parking area. It is a moderate hike of about 1.5 miles to reach the viewpoint at High Rock. Be sure to wear appropriate hiking shoes and bring water, as the trail can be steep in sections.
