The most common route is to take Interstate 70 (I-70) East from the Appalachian Mountains. Merge onto I-81 North towards Hagerstown. Take exit 5 for MD-64 West towards Smithsburg. Follow MD-64 until you reach Smithsburg. From there, look for signs indicating the South Mountain State Park. The drive will take approximately 1-2 hours depending on your starting point in the Appalachian Mountains. There is no cost for parking at the trailhead.
