Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the town of Chiquian. Drive along the PE-3N highway towards the direction of Huayhuash Circuit. Follow the signs to Huayhuash, and then navigate towards the town of Cuartel. From Cuartel, take the unpaved road leading to the Cuyoc Pass trailhead. Be prepared for rough terrain; a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. The drive should take approximately 2 hours from Chiquian, depending on road conditions. Ensure you have a detailed map or GPS, as the roads can be confusing.
Public Transportation
To reach Cuyoc Pass via public transportation, first take a bus from Huaraz to Chiquian. Buses run frequently and the journey takes about 3 hours. Once in Chiquian, you will need to find a local taxi or shared taxi (known as 'colectivo') heading towards Cuartel. The taxi ride to Cuartel will take around 30-45 minutes. From Cuartel, you will need to embark on a hike towards Cuyoc Pass, which is approximately a 3-4 hour trek. Ensure you are equipped with proper hiking gear and have enough water and snacks for the hike.
Hiking
Once you reach Cuartel, you will begin your hike to Cuyoc Pass. The trail is well-marked, but it's advisable to use a map or GPS for navigation. The hike involves a gradual ascent, and you will be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Make sure to set off early in the day to avoid afternoon weather changes. The trek to the pass will take approximately 3-4 hours, depending on your pace. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and a camera to capture the breathtaking scenery.
