Walking
From the center of Guimarães, start at the Guimarães Castle, which is a well-known landmark. Head southeast on Rua de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira. Continue straight until you reach the Praça de Santiago. From there, take a right onto Rua da Conceição, and walk until you reach the Largo do Toural. At Largo do Toural, turn left onto Avenida Dom João IV. Follow this avenue until you reach the train station, Estação de Guimarães. From the train station, take a train towards Barcelos, which is approximately a 30-minute ride. Once you arrive at Barcelos station, exit and head northeast on Rua de João de Barros. Continue walking straight until you reach Largo da Porta Nova, where the New Gate Tower is located.
Public Transport
From Guimarães, make your way to the Guimarães train station (Estação de Guimarães). You can walk there from the city center by heading southeast on Rua de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, then turning right onto Rua da Conceição, and finally left onto Avenida Dom João IV. At the station, purchase a train ticket to Barcelos. The train ride will take around 30 minutes. Once you arrive at Barcelos, exit the station and head northeast on Rua de João de Barros for about 10 minutes. You will arrive at Largo da Porta Nova, where the New Gate Tower is situated.
