Travel Guide to Penedo do Tanque

Getting There

• Car

  If you're traveling by car, head towards the town of Terras de Bouro, which is the closest major town to Penedo do Tanque. From Terras de Bouro, take the N204 road heading northeast. After approximately 6 kilometers, look for the turn-off to the dirt road that leads towards Penedo do Tanque. This road might not be well marked, so be vigilant for local signs or landmarks. Continue on this road for about 2 kilometers until you reach a small parking area. From there, you will see walking paths leading up to Penedo do Tanque, which is approximately a 15-minute hike uphill.

• Public Transportation

  If you prefer public transport, take a bus from Braga to Terras de Bouro. The bus service is operated by Rede Expressos and runs several times a day. Once you arrive in Terras de Bouro, you may need to hire a taxi or walk to the N204 road. If walking, head northeast towards the N204 for about 1 kilometer, and then follow the same directions as by car. Note that the paths are not always well marked, so it may be helpful to have a map or a GPS-enabled device.

• Hiking

  If you are already in the surrounding hiking trails of Peneda-Gerês National Park, you can approach Penedo do Tanque by hiking from the nearest trails. Look for signs directing you towards Terras de Bouro and then connect to the paths leading to Penedo do Tanque. Ensure you have proper hiking gear and sufficient water, as the terrain can be rugged. The trail from the main paths may take about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your starting point.
