Car
If you're traveling by car, start your journey from the center of Unhais da Serra. Head southwest on the N339 road towards the direction of Serra da Estrela Natural Park. Continue on N339 for approximately 5 km until you reach the turn-off for Covão do Boi, which is well marked. Follow the signs for Covão do Boi and park in the designated parking area near the entrance to the natural preserve. The scenic drive offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a bus from Unhais da Serra to Manteigas. Buses run several times a day and the ticket price is approximately €5. Once you arrive in Manteigas, you will need to catch a local taxi to Covão do Boi, as public transport does not directly reach the site. Expect to pay around €10-€15 for the taxi, which will take you directly to the entrance of Covão do Boi.
Walking
If you're already near Covão do Boi and prefer to walk, it's a beautiful hike from Unhais da Serra. The trailhead begins at the main square in Unhais da Serra. Follow the marked trail which leads you through lush greenery and stunning landscapes. The walk is approximately 3 km and takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on your pace. Ensure you wear comfortable shoes and bring water for the journey.
