Discover more about Time Out Market

History and Architecture

The Mercado da Ribeira, originally opened in 1892 as Lisbon's main wholesale market, features an iconic iron interior under a large oriental-style dome. Renamed and revitalized as Time Out Market in 2014 by Time Out Portugal, it transformed a declining space into a global gastronomic destination while preserving half for traditional fresh produce stalls selling fish, fruits, and vegetables from 6am to 2pm.

The Food Hall Experience

The heart of the market is its expansive food hall with 26 stalls from acclaimed chefs like Henrique Sá Pessoa, Alexandre Silva, and Marlene Vieira, offering seafood, steaks, pizzas, sushi, and pastries at accessible prices. Communal tables encourage sharing amid a lively atmosphere, with central bars serving local wines, cocktails, and fresh juices. Desserts shine at spots like Manteigaria's custard tarts and L'Éclair's specialties.

Bars, Shops, and Upper Level

Eight bars provide everything from caipirinhas to Licor Beirão, while a dozen shops sell Portuguese cheeses, hams, chocolates, and crafts. Upstairs, the Time Out Studio hosts concerts for 350-650 guests, a gallery, cooking academy, and club, making it a cultural hub.

Outdoor and Events Space

Outside, a terrace with 250 seats faces Dom Luis I Square, ideal for al-fresco dining from a kiosk. The venue excels for private events, with pre-loaded cards for groups and curated shows reflecting Lisbon's best.
