Bus
From the center of Viana do Castelo, head to the main bus station located at Rua de São Pedro. Look for a bus that goes to Valença; these buses are typically marked with 'Valença' on their destination signs. The journey will take about 30 minutes. Once you arrive at Valença bus station, you can follow the signs to Castelo de Valença, which is about a 10-minute walk uphill from the bus station. Head towards the historic center, and you will see the castle as you approach the walls.
Train and Walk
From Viana do Castelo, walk to the nearest train station, which is Estação de Viana do Castelo. Purchase a ticket for a train heading towards Valença (make sure to check the schedule, as trains may not run frequently). The train ride takes approximately 30 minutes. Once you arrive at Valença train station, exit and walk towards the town center. Follow the signs to Castelo de Valença; it’s about a 15-minute walk uphill. The castle is situated on the top of the hill and offers stunning views of the area.

If you prefer to walk from Viana do Castelo to Castelo de Valença, start at Praça da República in the city center. Head east on Avenida dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra, following the river. Cross the bridge over the River Minho, and continue straight towards the direction of Valença. It’s important to note that this is a long walk (approximately 10 km) and may take around 2-3 hours depending on your pace. Follow the signs as you approach Valença, and once in the town, head uphill towards the castle.
