Car
If you are driving, start on Memorial Boulevard (Route 138) and head toward Newport Cliff Walk. Look for signs directing you to the Cliff Walk parking areas. One of the closest parking lots is at Easton’s Beach (also known as First Beach). From the parking lot, head toward the Cliff Walk entrance. Walk along the path until you reach the iconic Forty Steps, which is located at approximately 41.475936 latitude and -71.2972721 longitude. Please note that parking at Easton’s Beach may incur a fee, especially during peak tourist seasons.
Public Transportation
If you are using public transportation, take the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) bus number 67 or 60 to Newport. Get off at the stop at Memorial Boulevard. From there, walk towards Easton’s Beach. Once you reach the beach, locate the entrance to the Cliff Walk. Follow the path until you arrive at Forty Steps. Be aware that bus fares may apply, so make sure to check the RIPTA website for the most current fare information.
Walking
For those already walking along Newport Cliff Walk, follow the path southbound towards Forty Steps. As you walk, enjoy the scenic views of the ocean and the historic mansions. After several minutes of walking on the trail, you will see the entrance to Forty Steps. There may be some stairs leading down to the viewing area, so be prepared for that. This part of the walk is free of charge.
