Hi, I'm Eve. Here are a few practical things to know before exploring Păpușa Peak.
Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you're traveling by car, start from the town of Petroșani. Take DN66 towards Târgu Jiu. After approximately 20 kilometers, turn onto DJ663 towards Rânca. Continue on this road until you reach the Parâng Ski Resort area. Here, you can park your car. The parking area is near the lift station. Note that parking fees may apply, usually around 10-20 RON for a day.
Hiking
From the Parâng Ski Resort, begin your hike towards Păpușa Peak. The trailhead is marked and can be found just behind the ski lifts. The hike to Păpușa Peak is approximately 6 kilometers and takes about 2-3 hours. Follow the marked trail, which is well-maintained. Be sure to carry sufficient water, snacks, and a map. The trail is moderately challenging, so wear comfortable hiking shoes.
Public Transportation
If you prefer public transportation, take a train or bus to Petroșani. From there, you can catch a local bus heading towards Rânca. Once you arrive in Rânca, you can either hike (as described above) or take a taxi to the ski resort area. Taxi fares may vary, but expect to pay around 30-50 RON for the short ride. Ensure to check the bus schedules in advance, as they may not run frequently.
Guided Tours
Another option is to book a guided tour from Petroșani or Rânca that includes transportation to the trailhead. This can be a convenient option, especially if you're unfamiliar with the area. Prices for guided tours vary, typically ranging from 100-300 RON per person, depending on the inclusions such as meals and equipment.
