Car
If you're driving, start from the nearest major city, which is Deva. Take DN7 towards the town of Hateg. Once in Hateg, follow the signs to Retezat National Park. Park your car at the entrance of the park, at the main parking area near the Rausor Chalet. Note that there may be a small parking fee, typically around 5-10 RON (Romanian Lei). From the parking area, follow the marked hiking trails towards Vf. Retezat.
Public Transportation
Take a train or bus to Hateg from major cities like Timisoara or Bucharest. Upon arrival in Hateg, you can take a local bus or taxi to the Rausor Chalet, which is the closest access point to Retezat National Park. It’s important to check the local timetable for bus schedules, as they may not run frequently. The bus fare should be around 10-20 RON. From Rausor Chalet, follow the marked trails to Vf. Retezat.
Hiking
Once at Rausor Chalet, begin your hike towards Vf. Retezat. The trail to Vf. Retezat is well-marked, but it is recommended to have a good map or GPS. The hike is challenging and typically takes about 3-4 hours, depending on your fitness level. Ensure you bring enough water and snacks for the journey.
