Private Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the city center of Kigali. Head east on Avenue de la Riviere towards Avenue de la Paix. Continue straight onto the N1 highway and follow the signs for Akagera National Park. You will need to drive approximately 2 hours (around 120 km). Once you reach the park entrance, follow the signs to Akagera Live Tours, which is located at the park office. Note that you may need to pay an entrance fee for the park, which can vary, so be prepared for additional costs.
Public Transportation
To reach Akagera Live Tours using public transportation, you can take a bus from Kigali to Kayonza or Akagera National Park. Buses leave regularly from the Nyabugogo Bus Station in Kigali. Once you arrive at Kayonza, you can take a moto-taxi (motorcycle taxi) or a shared taxi to the park entrance. The total travel time can take around 3 to 4 hours, depending on wait times and traffic. Make sure to ask the bus conductor to inform you when to get off. Additionally, you should budget for the bus fare (approximately RWF 1,500 to RWF 3,000) and the moto-taxi fare (around RWF 3,000 to RWF 5,000).
Tour Operator Shuttle
If you prefer a more organized option, consider booking a shuttle service through a local tour operator. Many companies offer shuttle services from Kigali directly to Akagera National Park, including Akagera Live Tours. This service usually includes the entrance fee to the park and can be booked in advance. The shuttle typically departs in the morning and takes around 2 to 3 hours to reach the destination. Expect to pay around RWF 15,000 to RWF 25,000 for this service.
