If you are traveling by car, start from the nearest major town around Karisimbi Volcano, which is Musanze. From Musanze, take the RN4 road towards Buyoga. Continue on RN4 for approximately 22 kilometers until you reach the area near Buyoga. Look for the coordinates 72M4+M8, which is the exact location of Muyanza Dam. There is a small parking area nearby where you can safely leave your vehicle.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, start by taking a taxi-brousse (shared minibus) from Musanze to Buyoga. The taxi-brousse station is located in the center of Musanze. Once you arrive in Buyoga, you can ask locals for directions to Muyanza Dam, which is located at coordinates 72M4+M8. It’s about a 1-2 kilometer walk from the main road to the dam. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a bit of walking. The fare for the taxi-brousse should be around 1,000 RWF.
Walking
If you're already in the vicinity of Buyoga and prefer walking, head towards the coordinates 72M4+M8. From the main road, you can ask locals for further guidance if needed. The walk should take approximately 30 minutes, and you'll enjoy the scenic views of the surrounding area on your way to Muyanza Dam.
