Kigali Genocide Memorial: A Journey Through History

Getting There

• Boat and Bus

  From Karongi town, head to the shores of Lake Kivu. Look for the boat dock where local boats operate. Purchase a ticket for a boat to Gisenyi, which will take approximately 1-2 hours depending on the weather. Once you arrive in Gisenyi, disembark and proceed to the bus station located near the shore. Take a bus heading to Kigali. The bus ride will take around 3-4 hours. Once you reach Kigali, ask the bus driver or locals for directions to KG 14 Ave. The memorial is about a 15-minute walk from the bus stop.

• Public Transport (Bus)

  From Karongi, walk to the main bus station in town. Look for a bus heading directly to Kigali, which can be found at the station. The bus ride will take approximately 3-4 hours. Once in Kigali, get off at Nyabugogo Bus Station. From there, you can take a moto-taxi (motorcycle taxi) or a local taxi to the Kigali Genocide Memorial located at KG 14 Ave, Kumukenke. The ride should take around 15-20 minutes.

• Walking and Public Transport

  If you're feeling adventurous, you can walk to the nearest bus stop in Karongi and take a local bus to Kigali. After arriving at Nyabugogo Bus Station in Kigali, you can either walk or take a moto-taxi to the Kigali Genocide Memorial. The memorial is roughly a 30-minute walk from the bus station, so ensure you have a map or ask locals for directions to KG 14 Ave.
