Getting Around

History of Siloso Beach

A Coastal Military Position

Siloso’s historical importance comes from its position on Sentosa’s western approach to Singapore. Fort Siloso formed part of the island’s coastal defence system, with artillery, observation positions, tunnels and supporting structures intended to protect the harbour approaches. The surviving fort complex reflects the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century militarisation of Singapore’s shoreline, when strategic waters were watched from fortified coastal points rather than leisure promenades. Today, the remains provide the clearest physical link between Siloso Beach and the island’s earlier defensive role.

War and Occupation

During the Second World War, Fort Siloso remained part of Singapore’s defensive landscape, and Sentosa was affected by the Japanese occupation that followed the British surrender in 1942. The fort and its surrounding installations are now interpreted through preserved military structures, information panels and the Fort Siloso History Trail. These traces give Siloso a significance beyond its recreational identity, placing the beach within the wider story of Singapore’s colonial defence, wartime upheaval and post-war recovery.

From Island Name to Resort

For much of its modern history, Sentosa was known as Pulau Belakang Mati, an island name commonly translated as ‘Island of Death Behind’. In the early 1970s, the island was renamed Sentosa and developed as a leisure destination, bringing roads, visitor facilities, beaches and attractions to a landscape previously associated with military use and restricted access. Siloso Beach became one of the principal public-facing shores of this transformation, retaining nearby fort remains while gaining the recreational infrastructure that defines its contemporary character.

A Contemporary Leisure Shore

Later development concentrated adventure attractions, beach dining, event spaces and resort facilities around Siloso, making the western shore one of Sentosa’s most activity-oriented areas.
