History of Resorts World Sentosa

From Pulau Belakang Mati to Sentosa

The island now known as Sentosa was historically called Pulau Belakang Mati, a Malay name commonly translated as “island behind death”, although interpretations of its origins vary. For much of its history the island was associated with coastal defence, military installations and small-scale settlement rather than resort tourism. In the post-war period, Singapore began considering how the island could serve recreation and public leisure. The government renamed it Sentosa in 1970, using a Malay word associated with peace and tranquillity, as part of a broader effort to establish it as a destination for recreation and tourism.

Sentosa’s Tourism Transformation

From the 1970s onwards, Sentosa was progressively developed with beaches, hotels, attractions, roads and visitor facilities. The island’s transformation involved substantial landscaping and infrastructure works, changing a former military landscape into a managed leisure destination. Cable-car access, the Sentosa Development Corporation’s attractions and later the Sentosa Express strengthened connections with mainland Singapore. Resorts World Sentosa belongs to this later phase of development, concentrating major attractions and accommodation in the northern part of the island rather than expanding Sentosa as a conventional urban district.

Resorts World Sentosa Opens

Resorts World Sentosa was developed by Genting Singapore as an integrated resort and opened in stages from 2010. Universal Studios Singapore and the casino began operations in 2010, establishing a new scale of commercial entertainment on Sentosa. The project also introduced a large hotel cluster, restaurants, retail areas and convention facilities. Its arrival marked a significant change in Singapore’s tourism strategy, adding integrated resorts to the country’s established portfolio of business, cultural and family attractions while generating a concentrated visitor economy on Sentosa.

Aquatic Attractions and Continuing Renewal

The resort broadened its family and marine offer with Adventure Cove Waterpark in 2012 and the opening of S.E.A. Aquarium later that year.
